Brake Shoes and kits
Over the years the use of remanufactured shoes has become the common practice in heavy duty trucking. Haldex/Midland has built one of the most efficient, state-of-the-art, quality systems for guaranteeing the quality of the process. In March, 2009 Haldex produced their two millionth brake shoe using their 30 point inspection program to ensure product quality. Haldex is Plaza's main supplier for relined shoes with Meritor further expanding a strong product line.
Brake shoes are most often sold in kits that include certain hardware that should always be replaced. You may find that your only challenge is to decide on the proper friction material to use for the brake lining. To help you with your decision we have a little "Q&A" from Plaza's "Brake Center".
Question. Why does one brake shoe cost twice as much as another for the same truck axle?
|
There are hundreds of brake lining “mixes” being sold in the United States. These different shoes are designed for many different applications and temperature ranges Go to this link for an excellent discussion by Haldex on the role of the lining in controlling brake shoe heat.
When you need brake shoes your supplier should ask what loads and weights you carry, how many stops you make and what type of terrain you travel. A trash truck making hundreds of stops per day under heavy loads requires a much different and higher priced brake shoe than an over-the-road truck-trailer rig. This link will give you a list of the many Haldex brake linings stocked by Plaza Fleet Parts. |
These are universal FMSI (Friction Material Standards Institute) shoe type numbers. They tell you the style of shoe “table” (or mechanical design) that fits your truck axle. They do not tell you anything about the type of brake lining that is riveted to the shoe table.
If you are having difficulty determining what kind of brake you have, it may help to go to this link and check the most common brake shoe types or tables or just call our customer service department for assistance.

What does “extended service” brake shoe mean?
|
Since approximately 1997, most original equipment truck axle manufacturers provide brake shoes that are 20% thicker than the standard shoes. These thicker shoes require a camshaft that is deeper cut to make room between the shoe and the brake drum. If you have an older truck, in most cases, you can change camshafts and convert to the thicker, longer lasting extended service design. If your truck is newer than about 1997 you probably have the extended service style camshaft so you want to be sure you purchase the extended service shoe for the long life advantage they offer. Very common FMSI numbers are Rockwell 4515 standard shoe and its upgraded 4707 extended service design. Ask our customer service representatives how to identify your shoe design.
|
Are all brake drums the same?
|
Getting heat out of the brake shoe and drum assembly is critical to brake performance and life. Original equipment cast drums are designed to maximize heat dissipation. Some aftermarket brake drums are made using less material and actually weigh less than the original equipment drum. They typically sell for a lower price than the original drum and will not offer the same performance. Also, a worn brake drum, if re-used with new brake shoes, will not remove the heat from the brake assembly as efficiently as desired and can affect brake stopping performance and shoe wear. We supply only original equipment style drums made by original equipment manufacturers.

The brake shoes listed below are some of the most popular shoes that we sell and all are currently in stock. To use the list you will need to know your base shoe number or “shoe table” number. (See our illustrations of the most common shoe tables to confirm your base shoe number.) More than one friction material may be available in stock and not all of the materials have been explained here. Many shoes come as part of kits that include additional small parts that you may want.
Our parts specialists can advise you regarding your selection of friction material and inform you about brake shoes in stock that are not listed here. Ask us about our specially priced Truck Pride friction grades "TP" and "TPS" and the Haldex "KE" and "AB" grades.
