Otherwise known as Slip Tube and Midship Shafts
Slip tube shafts and midship tube shafts both have splines and are similar in appearance but function in different parts of the driveshaft. Midship shafts are the basic components of coupling shafts which (when necessary) are the part of a drive shaft that is connected to the frame at a center bearing.
What you need to know to replace a slip tube shaft:
- Spline outside diameter (OD) and the number of teeth
- Diameter and wall thickness of the tube to which it must attach.
- The length from the end of the spline to the point where the tube is welded. (Dimension “K” in diagram below.
Slip Tube & Midship Shafts
What you need for a midship tube shaft:
- 1,2, and 3 are the same requirements as above with the addition of the length from the end of the spline to the bearing shoulder (dimension Y below)
- Diameter of the shaft at the point (see “C” on diagrams below) it is supported by the center bearing.
- The device to which the splined end will attach – this can be an end yoke that requires a fastening nut (style 2 on diagram), a companion flange (style 1 on diagram), or an outboard slip yoke (two versions). Note that the end yoke style has specific threads for securing a nut.
