  • Plaza has always maintained the suspensions of over-the-road tractors and trailers, but we really shine when it comes to the maintenance of the heavy duty suspensions of "vocational" trucks used for dumps, refuse, and ready-mix.
  • We know the fastest way of making these repairs so your truck is back on the road sooner.  We have the equipment, for example, to quickly press in bushings and can do it faster than you can do it yourself.

Some advice about bushings from a shop that knows

Typical Torque Rod with Bushings
At Plaza Fleet Parts we do a lot of “re-bushes” or replacing worn-out bushings. We do like this business but honestly we have to tell you that there is a better way. Bushings absorb the forces of leaning, cornering, acceleration, and braking and are designed for wear. When maintaining truck bushings the most important question you have to answer is how many times do you want to replace those bushings?

Rubber bushings are typically used for original equipment but when replacing those bushings you have the option of using bushings made with polyurethane (best described as synthetic rubber rather than “plastic”). The benefits of polyurethane are non-controversial and it is acknowledged to have ten times the abrasion resistance of rubber. Plaza sells a lot of polyurethane bushings which are fully described here.

If you expect to keep your truck working for you for a long time and expect that you might have to replace your rubber bushings 2 or 3 more times during its useful life, there is a very good chance that you will avoid those replacements by using polyurethane. Of course, we will miss seeing you in our shop, but we understand.

Leaf Spring Modification and Repair

U-Bolts Made While You Wait

Picture
Plaza is one of only a few shops in the area to have the equipment and expertise to replace a leaf or rebuild a leaf spring. If your load requirements change we can help. More often leaf springs will require the replacement of the spring's "eye" bushing (our specialty).

Air Spring Suspensions

We can diagnose problems and maintain any air spring suspension. A thorough inspection of an air suspension includes the main support members, or "Z" bars, transverse rods, torque rods, and U-bolts as well as the air springs themselves.

New Clutches Installed
Flywheels Resurfaced

You will know when your clutch needs maintenance but a close inspection of the flywheel is necessary to avoid problems. Inevitably flywheels need to be resurfaced. A clutch that slips will create added heat and can cause heat cracks, warpage, and hard spots in the surface of a flywheel. Since a replacement clutch will not last if installed with a worn flywheel, we can inspect your flywheel and resurface it if necessary. If there are cracks that are more than “surface deep”, replacement of the flywheel will be necessary.

One of the best values in the market for clutch replacements is a new (not reman) Sure Shift clutch. See our list of Sure Shift advantages.  Sure Shift clutches by D&W Clutch include the exceptionally durable "Beast" 15 1/2 clutch and the improved  14" clutch we call "The Answer". These clutches are exclusively offered in St. Louis by Plaza.

Air Charging System

Can you hear an air leak, but cannot find it?  Is your air compressor running constantly?  Is your air pressure gauge on its way to 170 psi?  Air valves do not last forever. Valves have springs that become tired and o-rings that lose their elasticity. We will test the operation of your air system, find the source of any leak, and replace valves as necessary in order to put your mind at ease.

You can rely on our experience to tell you when it is necessary to replace a costly piece of equipment such as an air compressor or air dryer.
