Bushings - Urethane, Rubber, Bronze
Bushings are what hold everything else in place. When bushings and torque rods begin to show wear, the overall suspension can no longer perform as it should. Atro's polyurethane bushings (also known as "poly" or "urethane" bushings) should be the first place you look for slowing down the aging process and reducing wear. Urethane is now being copied for bushings made by other suppliers but Atro is leading the way by using more than one urethane formulation and has expanded the use of polyurethane to more truck components than any other supplier.
Plaza also stocks bronze and rubber bushings by Dayton Parts for special applications or when you do not need the long life of polyurethane. Note some minor differences in terminology. Dayton Parts produces a broad range of bushings and includes metal bushings when referring to “bushings”. Dayton Parts also uses the term “cartridge” occasionally when Atro refers to the same part as a bushing. Click on the Video at the right to hear why Atro bushings help you to keep your truck in service and eliminate the more frequent replacement of rubber bushings. |

How Atro Has Engineered Bushings
Atro has made two breakthroughs in solving many problems inherent in the use of rubber for torque rod bushings. Not only are they using polyurethane in place of the rubber, but they have re-engineered how the bushing is attached.
The difference in design is that the Atro bushing surrounds a freely rotating pin so that no tension is put on the bushing when the torque rod is installed. The benefit is that an Atro bushing is free from the twisting and tearing action found in other bushings.

The difference in wear resistance is that the bushing material is not only resistant to solvents such as oil and grease, but the hardness of the polyurethane in Atro products is engineered to optimize the wear resistance and performance of the part in specific applications. For example, on a scale of 1 to 100 the hardness of a rubber tire tread ranges from 50 to 70. An Atro torque rod bushing may measure 90 on the same scale. An Atro motor mount may be 85 and an Atro pad or load cushion may measure 68. Follow this link to see the variety of components that Atro has improved with engineered polyurethane.

The original Atro bushings are already a good product but they have not stopped improving on them. They recognized that severe duty also requires resistance to metal corrosion and so they have begun to add a zinc coating. If you have a Hendrickson walking beam suspension you can take advantage of this feature for the bar pin beam end bushings. See Atro’s flyer announcing their ULTRABUSHING for Hendrickson, Kenworth, Peterbilt, and Freightliner applications.

Urethane works for autosPolyurethane bushings, not surprisingly, are recommended for higher performance in an automobile chassis. Read more from an automotive guy who says “Because rubber is a biodegradable product it is affected by ozone and will over time rot and degrade, while urethane will keep going and going.”
