How does a small company out-engineer a large company like Eaton?
Start by adopting the ideas of conservative, common-sense engineers.“Sure Shift” clutches were not designed by “Six Sigma Blackbelts” but just a few “Keep-it-Simple” engineers. Beginning in 2008 the Easy Pedal clutch was no longer protected by patent and D&W seized the opportunity to produce a new clutch based on the very reliable Easy Pedal design. They started by using the friction material and other components that already had the most success and they purchased components from nothing less than OE suppliers who typically are ISO 9000 and QS 9000 certified.
The clever engineers then went back in time to the already-proven coarse threaded internal adjusting ring to replace Eaton’s fine threaded ring and virtually eliminate seized ring problems They asked some obvious questions and changed the ends of the dampening springs to make them less abrasive and create less wear. They changed the shape of the dampening spring window to create less spring distortion. By increasing the life of the dampening springs and keeping the original friction material, they increased the life of the clutch discs by 30%.
Finally they assemble the components in a way that insures 100% accuracy and zero defects when our customer takes it out of the box.
